OlearnaBECE Grade 9 in English or Mathematics: Placement and a Resit
On 7 September 2026 the Ministry of Education said 35,382 candidates had grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics, and 18,505 had grade 9 in both. Those candidates were not in the first automatic placement. Grade 9 in one of those two subjects was still allowed onto the CSSPS self-placement portal. Grade 9 in both is a harder case, and families should read their own CSSPS status rather than a headline.

Why these two subjects gate the next school
SHS teaches in English, and Core Mathematics assumes the JHS paper. A grade 9 means the marker could not award a higher grade on that sitting. It does not mean the student cannot learn the subject. It means the next months have to be about that paper, not about collecting more subjects.
Self-placement is not the same as a resit
- Self-placement tries to put you in a school that still has space, under the rules CSSPS publishes. It does not rewrite the grade.
- A resit is another BECE sitting, as a private candidate, aimed at a better grade. It takes a registration window and another exam. See the resit guide.
Some families need the school place now and a calmer plan for the subject. Some need the grade itself because a programme will not take grade 9. Those are different conversations. A stranger who offers to "upgrade the result" is not one of the options.
What to practise
Mathematics
Number work, algebra, graphs, geometry, and the statistics questions that carry easy marks when the method is clean. Do not restart the textbook from page one if the diagnostic says fractions and equations are the hole.
English Language
Essay, comprehension, and the objective grammar paper fail for different reasons. A student who can speak well and still scores 9 often lost the composition or the summary, not "English" as a mood. Practise the paper type.
