JHS 2: Close the Gaps Before BECE Year
6 min read
JHS 2 feels ordinary. BECE is "next year", so a lot of students keep a subject at "I kind of get it" and move on. That subject is usually the one that hurts the aggregate.
Where the gaps hide
In Mathematics, algebra and the first mensuration start to punish guessing. In Science, cycles and systems stop being stories you can memorise the night before. In English, the writing gets longer than a paragraph. If any of those feel foggy in class, they will feel worse in JHS 3 when the teacher is racing the syllabus.
Do this once this term
- Pick the core subject you are least happy to be called on.
- Run a check on it. Write down the topic, not just the score.
- Practise that topic for two weeks. Review the misses every time. Do not add a second weak subject until the first one feels ordinary in class.
Your six best grades will matter at BECE. Improving a weak core subject now changes that sum more than polishing a subject you already like.
More on the years is on the JHS page. The exam year is on the BECE page.
