SHS 1 is the year to learn the new subjects, not to wait
The first year of senior high has its own cores and a set of electives the student just chose. Core Mathematics will not feel like JHS Mathematics. Integrated Science will not feel like JHS Science. An SHS 1 student can start in the first term, on the subject the class is actually teaching, and still have two years before WASSCE.
What to check in the first term
- Core Mathematics and English, before the electives swallow the evening.
- Integrated Science for every student. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology only if those are the electives.
- One elective that already feels fast. An elective that is fuzzy in SHS 1 is a private problem by SHS 3.
The syllabus is the one the school placed the student on. The older WAEC syllabus and the current one both exist here, and a student is not given the other one's papers. The map is the syllabus page. Junior high, if a younger sibling is the one studying, is JHS.
A first-year week
- One core. The free diagnostic, no account, one subject.
- Two evenings on the topic it named. Review the misses before a new set. That page is review.
- One elective on a different evening, so the programme does not go quiet until SHS 2.
- Skip the full WASSCE mock. SHS 1 is for learning the subject, timed later.
The label is On Track, Improving, or At Risk for that subject. A parent can read it. It is not a WASSCE grade. The next school year is SHS 2. All three years are on SHS. The exam at the end of the journey is WASSCE.
Common questions
Can an SHS 1 student start before WASSCE feels close?
Yes. SHS 1 is the year the new subjects are supposed to be learned. A check in the first term tells you which core or elective did not land. WASSCE is the SHS 3 exam.
Should SHS 1 still use BECE past questions?
BECE papers are the junior-high exam. SHS 1 practice is Core Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, Social Studies, and the electives on the programme. A familiar topic name is not the same course.
What if the student is on the new curriculum or the older one?
They practise the syllabus their school registered them on. The older WAEC syllabus and the current one are both on Olearna, and they are kept apart.
