How to Study in JHS: A Week a Student Can Keep

17 October 20268 min read

Junior high is three different years. JHS 1 is for the new subjects. JHS 2 is for the gaps that are starting to show. JHS 3 is the BECE year, and it is a bad time to meet a topic for the first time. The habit below fits all three. Only the size of the past-question work changes.

Pick one subject for the evening

English, Mathematics, and Science move the aggregate more than a subject you already enjoy. If one of those three feels shaky in class, that is tonight. Social Studies, Computing, Career Technology, Religious and Moral Education, and Creative Arts still need a turn in the week. They should not all share one evening.

A primary pupil who is getting ready for junior high starts on JHS 1 English and Mathematics. That is not a BECE mock. The page for that start is primary to JHS.

A week you can repeat

  • Monday and Tuesday: the topic the check named, or the topic the teacher taught today. Twenty to thirty minutes. Close the book when the time ends.
  • Wednesday: look at the questions you missed. Name the topic. Do two fresh questions on that topic before you start anything new.
  • Thursday: a second subject, usually the other core that is only okay. Same length. Do not add a third.
  • Friday: past questions, but only on the topics you already met this week. In JHS 1, a few questions are enough. In JHS 3, use a timed set.
  • Weekend: one longer sitting if you are in JHS 3. In JHS 1 and JHS 2, rest is part of the plan. A full mock every Saturday makes the next week tired, not ready.

How to use BECE past questions

Past questions show the shape of the paper. They do not tell you which topic is costing the marks. Check the subject first, then practise the topic the result named. A student who finishes ten pamphlets and still misses the same algebra has practised the wrong pile.

The guide for that order is BECE past questions. The year pages are JHS 1, JHS 2, and JHS 3.

How you know the week worked

You can name the topic you practised. You can answer a fresh question on it without the notes. The label for that subject moves, or it stays On Track because the work held. On Track, Improving, and At Risk are study labels. They are not BECE grades.

Take one subject on the free diagnostic. Then keep the week above until that subject feels ordinary in class.
